Both the Boy's and Girl's basketball programs have put together seasons that the entire Salesian Community is proud of, but they aren't stopping yet. Both programs have advanced to the NorCal Playoffs in the Open Division, giving them an opportunity to play for a California State Championship at the highest level. This is the Boy's 4th straight NorCal Open Division appearance, and 5th overall, as they were awarded the #1 overall seed in Sunday's seeding meetings. The Girl's were awarded the #4 seed in what is their 6th straight and 6th overall appearance in the NorCal Open Division Playoffs.
Since its inception in 2013 the Open Division has changed the dynamic of CIF State Basketball Playoffs. Prior to using this format schools would compete in divisions of like-sized schools leaving a lot of room for debate on the rankings of teams and programs. What the Open Division and rule changes have allowed for is competitive balance to run its course. With the new system schools compete based on recent success rather than school size. In the 7 year history of the Open Division Salesian has been represented very well. The Girl's have gone to 6 straight, only missing the first season of it in 2013 when they were the Division IV State Runner-Up. While the Boy's have gone to 4 straight and 5 of 7. 2014 and 2015 were the only years they missed, with the '14 season ending as the NorCal Division IV Runner-Up.
The Boy's received a Round I BYE as they are the top seed and only 6 teams have been selected to the bracket. They will take on the winner of Wednesday's contest between Archbishop Mitty and Modesto Christian, the #5 and #4 seeds respectively, at Albany High School on Saturday, March 2nd at 6PM.
The Girl's are set up for a rematch from Saturday's Division III NCS Championship game as they host St. Joseph Notre Dame in a #4 vs. #5 matchup this Wednesday, February 27th at 7PM in The Den. This will be the 3rd time the Pilots and The Pride face off this season with Salesian claiming both contests.
Come out and support the Pride as they make their push toward the State Championships! GO PRIDE!
